The Local Area: Highlights

Twickenham

Twickenham Stadium, the home of the Rugby Union. Seating 82,000, it is the fifth largest stadium in Europe and hosts the Six Nations matches and the Rugby World Cup.

Marble Hill Park in East Twickenham is a charming local park and the setting of Marble Hill House, a Venetian villa built for a mistress of George II and now a local landmark.

Twickenham has a thriving local music scene and a fantastic musical heritage. In the 1960's it was the area where R&B became famous and many young talents rose to fame including The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton and Rod Stewart. Check out the Eel Pie Club.

Kingston

The riverside is a popular attraction, particularly in the summer. A variety of lively bars, restaurants and traditional pubs line the riverfront.

The Rose Theatre and several museums and art galleries

The Bentall Centre – a large shopping centre for anyone who wants to do some shopping!

Richmond

Richmond Park is one of the most celebrated Royal parks in London, known for its wildlife, listed buildings and spectacular scenery. Only a stones throw away from central London, and yet a complete escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. World Heritage Site, Kew Gardens is also a fantastic day out. If shopping is on your list of things to do, you can shop till you drop in Richmond with a variety of beautiful boutique shops and high street stores.

Teddington

Bushy Park, is the second largest of the Royal Parks of London after nearby Richmond Park. Take a stroll and you may catch a glimpse of the herds of red deer and fallow deer roaming freely.

Hampton Court Palace – a magnificent Royal Palace open to visitors.

Central London

If heading into central London is on your list of things to do in your spare time during the summer school - July is a great time of year to take advantage of the best that London has to offer:

Unique bars and views: Many London pubs have unique outdoor spaces to discover. Beer gardens and rooftops are a great way to enjoy views and London vibes over a drink or bite to eat.

Outdoor Cinema: enjoy some classic films under the stars at one of the Rooftop Film Club's venues.

Street markets: Grab your wallet on a Sunday morning and explore the eclectic Brick Lane, Portobello Road, Borough Market, Columbia Road and much more!

Food: pop-up food stalls, restaurants and bars set up all over London in the summer. If it’s a traditional afternoon tea or a top cheap eat your looking for – London has an endless selection of great options to choose from.

Parks and Gardens: There is a large selection of beautiful gardens to visit during the summer months in London – with a total of 8 Royal Parks throughout the city.

Summer in London

During the Warwick Summer School, there will be plenty of opportunities to explore London and the local area. St Mary’s campus has all the advantages of a great London location along with the peace of a beautiful self-contained campus.

Getting around is very simple – there are regular buses and trains that can take you in every direction.

You can take a 15 minute train to Kingston or Richmond where you will find plenty of convenient local amenities right on your doorstep. The high streets of Teddington and Twickenham are also just a 20 minute walk from campus and offer a good range of shops, restaurants and pubs.
