What will I learn?
Do you have a desire to understand the technologies that enable our connected world? This integrated joint honours course combines the study of computer science and electronic engineering, focusing on the design of computer systems and their real-time applications.
With teaching from research-leaders in the Department of Computer Science and the School of Engineering, you’ll explore digital electronics, lowpower systems, communications, control and realtime operation. The curriculum places particular emphasis on pervasive technologies, including wireless networks, mobile devices and sensors, robotics and wearable technology. You’ll learn to apply state-of-the-art computer science methods for validation and design, and code optimisation; and to use high-performance computing techniques to design efficient and robust embedded systems. You’ll develop skills in communication, documentation, reporting, teamwork, and the ability to effectively articulate technical concepts.
In your first year you’ll study computer programming, data structures and algorithms, system modelling, and electronic devices and circuits. Your second year builds on both core disciplines, covering areas such as digital systems, analogue systems design, advanced computerarchitectures, software engineering, signal processing and computer networks. Industry sponsored second-year projects provide exposure to leading organisations and real-world problems, and there’s flexibility to move between the BEng and MEng programmes until the end of your second year (subject to achieving a 2:i or above in your second year). A supervised individual project in your third year enables you to apply your knowledge to an area of your choice. You’ll also study embedded systems, sensor networks and mobile communications, robotics, and modern VLSI design.
If you are studying the 3-year variant of this course you may choose to have your degree awarded as a BEng or a BSc. If you follow the MEng course, you’ll study more advanced material in your fourth year. You will need to achieve a 2:i or higher in your second year to continue on the MEng course or move from the BEng to the MEng.
How will I learn?
Our courses offer a balance of core material delivered through lectures, small-group seminars and hands-on laboratory sessions. Approximately a quarter of your time is spent in timetabled classes, with the remainder being used for private study, completing assignments and projects, and practical work in the computing laboratories, which are open 24/7.
How will I be assessed?
Your performance on most modules will be assessed by a combination of coursework and written examination. The coursework may be individual or group work involving programming, research, writing and presentation. The final-year project work is fully assessed by a presentation and project reports.
Each year contributes to the final degree classification, typically in the ratio of 10:30:60 for a BSc degree and 10:20:35:35 for a Master’s degree.
What opportunities are there to study abroad?
We support student mobility through study abroad programmes and all students have the opportunity to apply for an intercalated year abroad at one of our partner universities. The Study Abroad Team based in the Office for Global Engagement offers support for these activities, and the Department’s dedicated Study Abroad Co-ordinator can provide more specific information and assistance.

Access Courses Access to HE Diploma (QAA recognised) including appropriate subjects with distinction grades in level 3 units, and grade A in A level Mathematics or equivalent.

Taking a Gap Year Applications for deferred entry are welcomed.
Interviews We do not typically interview applicants.Offers are made based on your predicted and actual grades, along with your personal statement. Occasionally, some applicants may be interviewed, for example candidates returning to study or those with non-standard qualifications.
Open Days Applicants in receipt of an offer are invited to a Departmental Open Day. These are held between early November and early March. The university also allows prospective students to visit campus and take part in one of their main university open days, Campus Tours and Warwick Visits. What modules could I study?
The first year of our Computer Systems Engineering degrees provide an introduction to programming and computer science as well as engineering electronic systems.
You will take six core modules which could include Programming for Computer Scientists; Design of Information Structures; Computer Organisation and Architecture; Professional Skills; Engineering Mathematics and System Modelling, and Electrical and Electronic Circuits. Additional optional modules may include Mathematics for Computer Scientists I; Web Development Technologies; Computer Security; Biomedical Engineering; Multimedia Technology and a Foreign Language.
In your second year core modules could include Operating Systems and Computer Networks; Advanced Computer Architecture; Software Engineering; Engineering Mathematics and Technical Computing; Analogue Systems Design; Digital Systems Design. Additional optional modules may include Digital Communications and Signal Processing; Artificial Intelligence; Database Systems; Starting a Business and a Foreign Language.
In your third year core modules could include a Computer Systems Engineering Individual Project, Embedded Systems and Project Management. Additional modules could include Mobile Robotics; Computer Graphics; Sensor Networks and Mobile Data Communications; Fault-Tolerant Systems; Systems Modelling and Control; Fundamentals of Modern VSLI Design; Compiler Design; Neural Computing; Advanced Databases; Principles of Programming Languages, amongst others.
Your final year includes a core Group Project, alongside a selection of modules, some of which could include High Performance Computing; Image and Video Analysis; Advanced Computer Security; ASICs, MEMS and Smart Devices; Data Mining; Precision Engineering and Microsystems; Advanced Robotics; Biomedical Systems Modelling; Mathematical and Computer Modelling; Imaging and Sensing in Body and Brain; Healthcare Technology Engineering, amongst others.
