What will I learn?

(Accrediting institutions: IET and IMechE)

This accredited degree provides a solid foundation in manufacturing engineering and mechanical design principles in the context of advanced 21st-century technology.

You will be taught by experts from WMG (Warwick Manufacturing Group), renowned worldwide for its innovative links between academia and industry, learning from cutting-edge research in areas including automation systems and digital lifecycle management. You can take part in industrial visits and receive input from firms such as Tata Steel, encouraging you to apply your knowledge to realworld challenges, boosting your employability. Our multidisciplinary approach to solving engineering problems will equip you to work in a variety of industrial sectors. You will also develop research and design skills, along with the ability to innovate and develop products and processes.

In your first and second years* you will study core areas of engineering alongside optional modules such as biomedical engineering and aesthetics of design. In the following year(s), further core modules include CAD/CAM, design, quality, automation and robotics, life cycle engineering and innovative process development. We also offer flexible module options developed in collaboration with global engineering companies including Jaguar Land Rover and Rolls-Royce. You will also be able to apply your skills to an individual project such as rapid prototyping, robot design or processing of novel materials.

*Please note that we are proposing to reduce the common content to one year and one term rather than two years, in response to student feedback, meaning you will be able to follow your Manufacturing and Mechanical specialism sooner.

In your fourth year (MEng students only), you can widen your knowledge by adding an elective** in Sustainability, Robotics or Business Management. You will also complete a project, for example designing and building a human-powered submarine or a robot to rescue victims from a collapsed building.

**We are also proposing that electives will no longer be specifically named in degree titles for students joining us from 2017 onwards. These subjects can be studied as part of your degree programme, but are likely to not be specifically mentioned in your degree title. This will be confirmed on 31 March 2017. Please consider this when deciding on your university choices.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is through examinations and coursework. Coursework assessment can include laboratory reports, projects, essays and oral presentations. Assessment is normally 60–70% by examination and 30–40% by coursework.

What opportunities are there for work experience and to study abroad?

You can gain industrial experience throughout your course in the UK and abroad via visits, project work and placements during vacations. Our most recent scheme has enabled students to work on a project in Uganda, repairing micro hydro power generators. Some students can also take a year-long placement in industry or in a research environment.

Finally, MEng students can exchange their third year of study at Warwick to study with one of our partner universities abroad. Our current partners include universities in Europe, Australia, the USA, China, Japan and South Korea.

Becoming a Chartered Engineer

This requires both academic qualification and responsible experience in your chosen industry. The preferred academic qualification is a four-year accredited Master of Engineering (MEng) degree. Alternatively you can complete a three-year accredited Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) degree and complete ‘Additional Learning’ after graduation, perhaps in the form of an accredited MSc.

All our degrees (except Engineering Business Management and Engineering and Business Studies) are accredited as providing the academic component (in part or fully) needed for Chartered Engineer status.

Entry Requirements

A level AAA for MEng, to include A level Mathematics and Physics.
You must also achieve a pass in the science practical if your science A level includes a separate practical assessment.

A levels in applied subjects and mixed portfolios Candidates are considered on an individual basis. Grades will be similar to those for candidates taking academic A and AS qualifications.

International Baccalaureate 38 points for MEng, to include 6 in Higher Level Mathematics and Physics.

Other Qualifications Advanced Diplomas and Engineering Principal Learning qualifications will be considered alongside other qualifications and on a case by case basis. Access/BTEC Courses Access to HE Diploma (QAA-recognised) and BTEC Extended Diplomas in appropriate subjects considered, if offered with A level Mathematics at grade A for MEng or grade B for BEng/BSc. Distinctions are required in Access and BTEC qualifications.

Warwick International Foundation Programme (IFP) All students who successfully complete the Warwick IFP and apply to Warwick through UCAS will receive a guaranteed conditional offer for a related undergraduate programme (selected courses only). General Studies/Critical Thinking Offers normally exclude these subjects.

Essential Subjects

You must have studied Mathematics and Physics at Advanced or Higher level. You must also achieve a pass in the science practical if your science A level includes a separate practical assessment.
However, we recognise that Engineering draws on many skills and we are willing to consider highly motivated applicants with different qualifications provided there is good evidence of mathematical ability. We invite anybody in this situation to discuss their aspirations with us at the earliest opportunity.

We offer a Foundation in Mathematics module that can be taken in the first year in place of an optional module for those students not offering Mathematics at Advanced or Higher level study.

Interviews We do not typically interview applicants.Offers are made based on your predicted and actual grades, along with your personal statement. Occasionally, some applicants may be interviewed, for example candidates returning to study or those with non-standard qualifications.

What modules can I study?

Initially, all students follow the same programme covering topics which we believe are important for all engineers to understand. By the second term of Year Two you are able to specialise in Civil or switch to one of the other Engineering courses (such as: Automotive, Biomedical Systems, Electronic, Electrical and Electronic, Engineering Business Management, Mechanical, Manufacturing and Mechanical, or, Systems).

There are nine core modules in the first year which are currently:

· Dynamics and Thermodynamics

· Electrical and Electronic Circuits

· Engineering Design

· Engineering Mathematics

· Introduction to Engineering Business Management

· Introduction to Engineering: Professionalism and Practice

· Materials for Engineering

· Statics and Structures

· Systems Modelling, Simulation and Computing

You are also free to take A Modern Foreign Language module as an optional extra.

In the second year there are six core modules which are currently:

· Dynamics and Fluid Mechanics

· Electromechanical System Design

· Engineering Mathematics and Technical Computing

· Industrial Engineering

· Manufacturing Engineering Design

· Technical Operations Management

Optional modules currently include

In Year 3 you will complete an individual project and study core modules of:

· Automation and Robotics

In the fourth year you will study the core ‘Innovative Process Development’ module and take part in a group project. The rest of the course is made up of optional modules which currently include:

As the subject of Engineering and our school continuously evolve, the range of modules available and the content of individual modules may change in future years.
