English Language Teaching

  • MA in English Language Teaching (with a Specialism in Testing and Assessment)

This MA is one of six new courses in the UK being sponsored by the Chartered Institute of Educational Assessors (CIEA).

This degree is one of the few MA programmes in the UK that offers a specialism in language testing and assessment. It is also unique in providing a Professional Practice module that is run in collaboration with the Research and Validation section of The University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, one of the most famous providers of English language tests in the world. The programme has been designed for qualified and experienced teachers from a variety of professional backgrounds.

This MA is a twelve month, full-time, post-experience programme of study which consists of a taught course followed by a dissertation.


  • MA in Educational Assessment

The MA in Educational Assessment reflects an increasing recognition of the importance of educational assessment and an aspiration that individuals with expertise in assessment should become part of the staff in all educational establishments. The course is suitable for professionals working in a range of educational sectors, from primary through to further and higher education, who wish to further their abilities in assessment. It is designed to help students to extend their knowledge and deepen their understanding of the theory and research underpinning educational assessment and to explore ways in which this can be used to improve practice.

It has been developed in partnership between the Institute of Education and the Centre for Lifelong Learning.


MSc Analytical Science: Methods and Instrumental Techniques (AS:MIT, replacing IAMBEC)

The aim of this programme is to provide graduates who have either a chemical, biochemical, or biological background with advanced training in a wide range of analytical and modern instrumental methods to enable them to pursue careers in analytical laboratories. The course is particularly suited for training analysts to solve problems in pharmaceutical related disciplines and also in environmental chemistry.

Erasmus Mundus Masters in Complex Systems Science

A “complex system” comprises many interacting components leading to multiple levels of collective structure and organization. Examples include natural systems ranging from bio-molecules and living cells to human social systems and the ecosphere, as well as sophisticated artificial systems such as the Internet, power grid or any large-scale distributed software system. It is a key challenge for our society to better understand, adapt, design and control such systems.

Our Masters degree teaches the tools to analyse complex systems and to understand their emergent behaviour. Students are offered a variety of research project opportunities to develop experience applying this to fresh challenges from the real world and within academic research.

We offer an exceptional cross-disciplinary environment and experience, with the programme based around three leading research centres in Complex Systems, associated with the Universities of Warwick (UK), Ecole Polytechnique (de Paris, France), and Chalmers/Gothenburg (Sweden). The European Complex Systems Society is an associated partner.

The programme runs over two years (120 ECTS); it is half taught and half by research and leads to a JOINT (or double) Masters degree of University of Warwick, Ecole Polytechnique, Chalmers University (Gothenburg) and the University of Gothenburg.

  • MSc Economics and Psychological Science (Behavioural Economics)

To provide students who already possess a strong background in Economics with an advanced training in behavioural economics and cognitive decision-making, either as preparation for research or for a career as a professional behavioural economist.

On successful completion of the MSc in Economic and Psychological Science, you will have acquired:

  • The ability to identify, analyse and solve problems, including original research topics, in the area of behavioural economics; to design, conduct and analyse behavioural experiments; access and analyse large-scale datasets, and implement standard models of choice;
  • Knowledge and understanding of contemporary theoretical and empirical debates and research outcomes in behavioural economics and cognitive and decision sciences
  • A thorough grounding in advanced core areas of behavioural economics and the cognitive science of judgement and decision making

Programme and Project Management (Hong Kong)

  • Master of Science in Programme and Project Management

After completing the programme, students should be able to build up the concepts of strategic thinking and apply on the areas of project planning and control, financial and human behavioural operations; as well as managing organisational change.

This programme is designed for students who wish to move into project management, either in the technical or business field, or into a new field of expertise. It is suitable for those with work experience as well as those with little or no background in business or industry.

Computer Science

  • MSc in Cognitive Systems

Current every-day environments are unthinkable without various computational devices, such as smart mobile phones, ambient intelligence devices and the pervasive Internet. Due to the increase in computational power, driven by Moore’s law, complex systems, based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Cognitive Systems, mimicking human-like processes, which were too complex for systems in the past, are moving from academia research to current market applications, such as promoted by Google, Microsoft and Apple, leading to new and exciting R&D jobs.

The Cognitive Systems MSc (CogSys) allows for interdisciplinary study that harnesses the potential at the junction of normal cognition (Psychology), and complex computing systems (Computer Science), which go beyond the traditional university curricula. CogSys covers a variety of topics in the study of cognitive processes, in both natural and artificial systems. CogSys on one hand aims at human cognition, the understanding of how these complex cognitive systems are instantiated and developed. CogSys thus provides access to data and signal modelling approaches, neuroimaging and neurophysiological technology. Additionally, it integrates AI studies of problem solving, reasoning, planning, and natural language use that are based on higher level (symbolic) functionality. Moreover, CogSys looks at human-computer interaction with computational artefacts such as conversational agents, multimodal interfaces, virtual reality environments, and dialogue systems, and methods for automatically training such systems.

The Cognitive Systems MSc is a one-year full time programme. It is aimed at graduates who already have a first degree in Sciences (from Computer Science, Psychology, Engineering and Mathematics background. It is intended to extend their knowledge with more advanced specialized material reflecting current research at the cutting-edge of the disciplines related to Cognitive Systems.


  • MSc in Clinical Applications of Psychology

This innovative new course is being introduced jointly by the Department of Psychology and the Coventry-Warwick Clinical Psychology Doctorate programme. It is designed for Psychology graduates who plan to apply for admission to doctoral training programmes in Clinical Psychology, and are in the process of strengthening their credentials for the competitive entry process.

The taught components of the course will include modules on research methods tailored to clinical applications, evidence-based practice in adult, older adult, and child/adolescent populations, learning disabilities, and clinical case analysis.

The practical component of the course will be a unique 6-month placement in a local NHS trust that maintains a training relationship with our doctoral programme.
