The Stop Violence Against Women campaign focuses on ending violence against women in the family and in conflict/post conflict situations: two of the most dangerous environments for women globally. Our ultimate goal is basic human rights for women and girls everywhere.
Amnesty International opposes the death penalty because it is a violation of two fundamental human rights, as laid down in Articles 3 and 5 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights:
- the right to life, and
- the right not to be tortured or subject to any cruel, inhuman or degrading punishment
The death penalty is the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment. It is irrevocable and can be inflicted on the innocent. It has never been shown to deter crime more effectively than other punishments.
This campaign focuses on global poverty with a focus on slums, corporate accountability and maternal health.
Although terrorism is not a new phenomenon the 'war on terror' is. States are resorting to practices which have long been prohibited by international law, attempting to justify them in the name of national security.
While Amnesty acknowledges the right of governments to protect their citizens when they face complex challenges and threats, these measures should never result in the compromise of human rights.
This campaign focuses on the current state of human right's in China as well as calling for justice over the events at Tiananamen Square over 20 years ago.
Every year, millions of people suffer as a result of the irresponsible global arms trade. In 2006, 153 governments voted overwhelmingly at the United Nations to develop an Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) to control this deadly trade. Two years on, we are still watching and waiting for governments to honor this promise to deliver a treaty.
Amnesty's goal is to bring about a fair and effective asylum system. We attempt to achieve that goal in a number of ways - carrying out research into aspects of asylum policy and practice, developing proposals for improving those policies and practices, and then promoting our proposals with the government, members of parliament and other influential audiences.
