Tick survey
Ticks play an important role in the food chain as they are consumed by frogs, toads and various other species in the UK. However, few of us ever think of them as a welcome addition to our environment as they might transmit diseases, which makes it important to know where they occur. That is why the UK Health Security Agency runs the Tick Surveillance SchemeLink opens in a new window, collecting information from members of the public about the presence of ticks.
This year, for the first time, we will be conducting a pilot study to explore whether ticks are present at selected green spaces on and near to campus. This will contribute to our increasing knowledge about the biodiversity assets of the site, which will enable us to continue employing evidence-based decision making that will benefit both wildlife and people.

How we survey for ticks
We will use a standard tick-dragging method across vegetation over a set of habitat strips or short transects, following established guidance for active tick surveillance. The cloths will be checked regularly for attached ticks, which then will be removed with fine forceps or tweezers by the activity lead/s and collected in sealed containers.
No prior experience with the survey methodology is required as training and supervision will be provided.
Each survey will last 1-1.5 hrs.
We will be working away from the footpaths, on uneven ground. Participants MUST wear sturdy, closed footwear and long trousers. The activity lead will turn away anyone who is not suitably dressed for the survey.
Please note, as opposed to all our other species surveys where wildlife are safely released back to the environment, in this case the collected ticks will be preserved for potential future study and/or to be submitted to the UKHSA Tick Surveillance Scheme.

This event is open to students and staff. Places are limited so sign-up is essential.
