What do I need to know before applying?

  • We welcome applications to be a mentor from staff and students at any career level. We'll match you with a mentee based on the experience you can offer and their goals for a mentoring relationship.
  • The mentors handbookLink opens in a new window (produced by Leadership and Management Development) is a great resource to understand what mentoring is and isn't, what will be involved for you as a mentor, and the responsibilities you'll have under GDPR etc.
  • Leadership and Management Development offers training and CPD for mentorsLink opens in a new window. We're encouraging all our mentors to take this online course unless they have prior mentoring experience.

What skills do I need as a mentor?

Attitude
    • A genuine interest in the mentee, their concerns, needs, goals and aspirations.
    • Open – prepared to share their own experience of similar issues, being honest.
    • Empathic – able to appreciate how the mentee thinks, feels and behaves; to understand their ‘view of the world’.
    Skills
        • Good listener – able to focus on what the mentee is saying and put personal thoughts to one side.
        • Motivating and encouraging – to help channel the mentee’s energy into constructive change and overcoming challenges.
        • Able to offer the appropriate balance of challenge, encouragement and support.
        • Able to ask powerful questions whilst being non-directive.
        Knowledge – any of the following:
            • Experience of engagement with different audiences
            • How to get your engagement practice funded
            • How to publish about your engagement practice

            Preferences for working with a mentee

            We'll do our best to match you based on these preferences but it may not always be possible. When you're paired with someone we'll ask mentors and mentees to initially meet for a chemistry chat and a mentoring agreement conversation where you can get to know one another and see if you're the right fit for each other. If you don't feel we've paired you with someone appropriate you'll be able to walk away at this point.

We will keep a copy of your responses for up to 5 years, and keep in touch with you over that time to find out how you have benefitted from taking part in the mentoring programme.
