Thank you to all who attended our first virtual Science on the Hill evening, which took place on Tuesday 10 November 2020, 18:00 - 19:00. The recording of this event is available here.
Timetable of Talks
Professor Lawrence Young - Introduction to the SARS-CoV-2 virus, how it is transmitted and how infection results in disease.
Dr Chrystala Constantinidou - Piecing together the SARS-CoV-2 transmission puzzle: As the virus spreads from person to person, it acquires small changes in its genetic code that act like fingerprints. We use genomics to identify these changes and chart its movements within a care home and a local hospital.
Dr Nicole Robb - COVID-19 – how we test for the coronavirus: Dr Nicole Robb is a scientist who normally investigates how respiratory viruses like influenza reproduce themselves in the body, as well as developing new ways to detect viruses. When COVID-19 emerged she and her team shifted their focus to the detection of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes the COVID-19 disease. In this talk she will describe the different types of diagnostic tests that can tell you if you have the virus, and discuss her latest work on the development of a 5-minute COVID-19 test.
