Building Communities, Ancient and Modern
The Warwick Classics Network organised a creative competition for schools based on the theme of architecture and its role in building communities. Schools from the local area and beyond were invited to submit creative pieces exploring this theme. Submissions included the design of virtual ancient or campus-inspired buildings using Minecraft, as well as artwork and creative writing. Each entry was accompanied by a short written reflection on the project theme.
Participants were encouraged to base their designs on real ancient buildings or present-day campus structures—or to imagine their own vision of the buildings that played a key role in the society of ancient Athens or Rome, or within the campus community of the University of Warwick.
This project was co-designed by a team of Warwick students on the Public Engagement in Classics module, led by Dr Paul Grigsby, in collaboration with schools across the country, including several in Coventry.
As part of a wellbeing and community-building initiative, Warwick students also built a Lego Colosseum in the Department of Classics. This impressive model was on display at FabFest Schools Day, where visiting schools had the opportunity to explore the Colosseum using Virtual and Augmented Reality.
