Sexual Health Poetry
Friday, 27th November 2009
Writer's Room, CAPITAL Centre
3pm-6pm (with breaks and nibbles)
As part of the arts section of the week, we will be hosting a creative writing workshop centred around AIDS and sexual health.
Can Sonmez, a PhD student writing on the representation of AIDS in poetry will be introducing the session with an analysis workshop on poets as diverse as Thom Gunn, Tory Dent and Paul Monette - a great way to into some great poets.
This session will be followed by a short break, with a chance to add to our CAPITAL Centre petri-dish installation (just a little craft session - it's well fun and it's so easy to do)
Matt Nunn, the infamous Birmingham poet, will then be joining us to lead a wild, creative approach to sexual health poetry - it's a little developed industry so participants will be breaking (and making) the mould - and with his help, you will be writing about AIDS prevention, the stigma surrounding STDs and HIV, the humorous ways we have in avoiding STDs, the tension of being tested, the realisation of being infected, and perhaps even about the AIDS crisis that is still occurring worldwide.
