Warwick Medical School awarded silver Athena SWAN

Athena Swan Silver Award

Warwick Medical School (WMS) is to receive an Athena SWAN Silver award for its school-wide work supporting the Charter for Women in Science.

WMS is the only medical school in England to hold the Silver award and had previously picked up the Bronze award in April 2012.

The Athena SWAN Charter recognises and celebrates good employment practice for women working in science, engineering and technology in higher education and research.

The November 2012 award round was the biggest Athena SWAN has ever had with 96 award submissions and 14 panels.

Dean of WMS, Professor Peter Winstanley said: “WMS is delighted to be recognised by Athena-SWAN at the Silver level of achievement - the only medical school in England and one of only two in the UK. Of course, this is not a matter of simply collecting awards: if WMS wants to support its most talented people, and progress as a result, then it’s critical that we attend to gender inequity issues, and establish a level playing field”.
