Heart disease & blood pressure research wins international accolade
The city of Coventry has been recognised as an international centre of excellence for research into hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
Researchers at the University of Warwick working with colleagues at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust have been given a Centre of Excellence Award for Hypertension and Cardio-Metabolic Research.
The award, from the European Society of Hypertension, is one of only six handed out in the UK and it highlights the groundbreaking research being carried out in the areas of blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. Professor Franco Cappuccio, Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine and Epidemiology at Warwick Medical School, is one of the leading figures for the Centre.
He said: “This award is great news for Coventry and Warwickshire and it is a chance to really put the region on the international map for research and for excellence in hypertension and cardiovascular care. The Centre is an excellent example of partnership working between academics and clinicians at the University and the NHS. It is an opportunity to strengthen the links between the University, secondary and primary care NHS Trusts in the region for the long-term benefit of the Coventry & Warwickshire population.”
A launch event for the centre was held earlier this month at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire with the participation of Professor Stuart Palmer, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Warwick, Professor Yvonne Carter, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Dean of Warwick Medical School and Professor Gordon McInnes, President of the British Hypertension Society.
