Information for health professionals
Current Eligibility Criteria (as per AIR Protocol V5.0):
Inclusion Criteria:
- Provision of written informed consent.
- Aged 18 years or over.
- A closed ankle fracture for which the treating clinician would consider plaster cast a reasonable management option.
- Within 3 weeks of operation or injury if non-operative.
Exclusion Criteria:
- Ankle fracture secondary to known metastatic disease.
- Complex intra-articular fracture (e.g. Pilon fracture).
- In the opinion of the surgeon the patient would require manipulation and close contact casting.
- In the opinion of the surgeon the patient would require manipulation and a moulded cast.
- Wound complications that would contraindicate fixed angle removeable orthotic intervention.
- Previous ankle fracture randomised in the present trial.
- Evidence that the patient would be unable to adhere to trial procedures or complete postal questionnaires.
- Known pre-existing neuropathic joint diease contraindicating fixed angle removable orthotic intervention.
