This study will see the effect of physiotherapy for people who have had a neck dissection as part of their treatment for head and neck cancer.

At the moment, if you have a neck dissection operation for head and neck cancer, the NHS does not routinely provide physiotherapy. Unfortunately after this operation quite a few people have problems with shoulder and neck movement, impacting their return to work and carrying out everyday tasks (such as dressing and household chores). Some surgeons and physiotherapists think that physiotherapy after leaving hospital might improve recovery.

In the GRRAND study, all patients that have a neck dissection will receive usual NHS care including physiotherapy whilst in hospital after their operation. However, half will also receive 6 sessions of physiotherapy, specifically designed for those who have had this surgery, as an outpatient after being discharged.
