Emma Phelps
Profile
I am a first year PhD student within the Division of Health Sciences at Warwick Medical School. The overall aim of my PhD research is to assess the impact of presenting a patient's own 3D medical image within a clinical consultation. The project will seek to gain an understanding of the benefits or dis-benefits of presenting information to patients in this form and will explore the impact of the 3D image on: clinical communication; knowledge and understanding of illness and trust and decision making. The study will adopt a mixed method approach, using non-participant observation, semi structured interviews, Roter Interaction Analysis Systems (RIAS) and psychology laboratory based experiments.
My research interests include: doctor- patient communication; health behaviour change; medical decision making and patient experience of medical technology. My previous research has looked at cervical cancer screening uptake; parental control and its effect on eating behaviour and impact and effectiveness of departments within a higher education setting.
In 2012 I obtained an MSc in Health Psychology from University College London. Prior to this, I graduated from the University of Surrey with a BSc (Hons) in Applied Psychology and Sociology (with Industrial Placement).
