Mindful Together

A Mindfulness Online Stress Intervention with peer mentoring for family carers of children and adults with Intellectual Disability

We are offering free places on Be Mindful for family carers of people with learning disabilities. Be Mindful is an online mindfulness course that has been designed for anyone to use. Ten easy-to-follow online sessions, featuring videos and interactive exercises, are presented by qualified mindfulness trainers. The course can be completed in as little as 4 weeks (but most people take a little longer). The sessions include:

Stepping out of automatic pilot
Reconnecting with body and breath
Working with difficulties
Mindfulness in daily life
Going forward

In previous work with families of people with a learning disability, carers found it helpful to have a trained peer mentor who also had a family member with a learning disability check in with them as they took part in the course.

We are inviting parent and adult sibling carers of children and adults with a learning disability to take part in the Be Mindful online programme, where carers will also be supported by peer mentors via telephone. You will work your way through the programme at your own pace – usually over several months. Family carers will be asked to answer questionnaires on two occasions before and after they take part and will be asked if they are happy to be invited to an optional interview about their experience of the programme. Please note that if you have previously taken part in Be Mindful, then you are not eligible to take part in this intervention. The project will run for around a year, from April 2022 to April 2023.
