Gendered Ceremony and Ritual in Parliament

About

The Gendered Ceremony and Ritual in Parliament Programme, funded by the Leverhulme Trust, examines how struggles over the meanings and performance of ceremony and ritual in parliament secure and reproduce as well as challenge and transform institutional norms. Its insights into the theory and practice or representation are intended to inform democratic practice and invigorate political participation.

Funded by a Leverhulme Programme Grant, GCRP commenced in October 2007, and ran for four years. It was a comparative programme, organised into three research teams, working on India, South Africa and Westminster.

GCRP was directed by Professor Shirin Rai, Department of Politics and International Studies, University of Warwick, in collaboration with Professor Sarah Childs (University of Bristol), Professor Joni Lovenduski (Birkbeck College) and Professor Georgina Waylen (University of Sheffield).

The programme included three doctoral studentships and three post-doctoral research fellowships. Doctoral researchers are based at the Universities of Bristol, Sheffield and Warwick. Post-doctoral researchers are based at the Birkbeck College and the Universities of Sheffield and Warwick. Two visiting fellows also participated.
