How to Act Responsibly
James Dempsey and Tom Sorell ask 'How to act responsibly' in The European Financial Review.
The case of Tom Hayes, recently imprisoned for 14 years for manipulating the Libor interest rate, illustrates well some of the ways in which financial sector employees can be drawn into irresponsible behaviour. De facto organisational values - those that are lived by employees on a day to day basis - exert a strong influence on behaviour. It is important for individuals to look beyond such organisational culture when deciding how to act. It is also important to avoid acting in ways that reinforce organisational values that may lead to others to engage in wrong doing.
