Feuer International Scholarship in Artificial Intelligence

The Feuer International Scholarships in Artificial Intelligence are prestigious and highly competitive.

Aimed at attracting outstanding students from the world’s best universities, the fully funded PhD scholarships support young people with potentially world-changing ideas around AI from across all academic disciplines.

They are funded by successful Warwick alumnus Jonathan Feuer, whose vision is to establish a group of extremely talented, academically brilliant, world-leading young researchers who will go on to have careers in the field of Artificial Intelligence.

If you are awarded a Feuer Scholarship for your PhD fees and stipend, you will have the chance to work alongside the University's Cyber Security research group and with world-leading academics and experts at the Alan Turing Institute in London.

You will also have access to industry partners and mentoring opportunities.

What is funded on the Artificial Intelligence Scholarship?

The Feuer International Scholarships in AI offer a generous funding package which includes:

  • Full PhD tuition fees for four years
  • A maintenance stipend in line with UKRI rates (provisionally £17,668 for full time award holders in 2022/23)
  • A Research, Training and Supporting Grant (RTSG) of £5,000 for four years
  • A Research Top up Grant for Travel/Conference/Equipment of £1,000 per year.

Please note: expenses are related to studies and conference attendance.

Applying for the Feuer International Artificial Intelligence Scholarship

What are we looking for?

Applications are welcomed from outstanding PhD applicants, and the Feuer International Artificial Intelligence scholarships are open to home, EU and international applicants.

We are looking for students with aspiration as well as intellectual aptitude. You should possess an innovative approach to problem solving, well developed technical skills, plus a willingness to work in a cross-disciplinary training and research setting.

It is important that you are open to learning new skills, which might be outside the field of your undergraduate and/or Masters degree. You must have, or be about to graduate with, a first class BSc Honours degree or international equivalent. Ideally you will also possess, or be about to be awarded, a Masters level degree with distinction.

What are the timescales for 2023 entry?

The first round of recruitment has been extended and now closes on 15th October, 2023

What is the application process?

The application process is in five stages:

Stage 1. Submit an Expression of Interest via the online form.

Stage 2. After we have reviewed your Stage 1 application, you may be invited to submit a full application, along with your CV.

Stage 3. If you are shortlisted, you will be invited to a scholarship interview in December 2023 with the Cyber Security research group's lead academics and the donor, Jonathan Feuer. This interview may be over video link if you are based overseas.

Stage 4. If you are offered the scholarship, you will need to accept your scholarship and your place at Warwick, and successfully complete the enrolment process.

Stage 5. Successful applicants will enrol and start their Feuer International Scholarship in AI.

The first Feuer International Scholars in Artificial Intelligence

Aparajita Haldar

Aparajita graduated with a dual degree of BE in Computer Science and MSc in Mathematics from BITS Pilani, Goa, India in 2018. Her key research interests are ethical machine learning; using knowledge graphs to improve data representations for natural language processing.

In the wake of the global pandemic, Aparajita's research group is
working to adapt an existing approach to developing an effective model for tracing the spread of disease through a population using a spatiotemporal event-interaction graph.

Harry Wilde

Harry graduated with a BSc in Data Science from the University of Warwick in 2019. During his studies, Harry spent time working in investment banking and at the Alan Turing Institute as a Data Science for Social Good Fellow, where he completed a project with the UK's largest homelessness charity (Homeless Link).

This year, Harry has worked on two grant applications. One of which has led to the receipt of funding from Microsoft to enable a collaborative effort with the JuliaLab at MIT on pandemic preparedness for the future and improvements to the modelling codebase.

Joe Oakley

Having studied at Warwick as an Undergraduate since 2016, Joe was eager to pursue his PhD here too. His research interests are in the design of scalable and privacy-preserving AI systems for spatio-temporal data, and their many potential real-world applications.

Joe's firm aspirations are to contribute new methods and models to the field of AI research, to engage with the relevant worldwide research communities, and to help create practical AI-based solutions to real-world problems.

Jenning Lim

In 2018, Jenning graduated with a BSc in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Bristol and an MSc in Machine Learning from UCL in 2021.

During his studies, Jenning has conducted research in the intersection between non-parametric kernel hypothesis testing and post-selection inference. He has broad interests in machine learning and I'm currently working on energy-based models.
