Hanover I by Bridget Riley
|
Riley was influenced by the work of Victor Vasarely. Like him, she exploited the optical technique to create challenging work. Her first optical works date from 1960 when she visited Spain and Italy. The early works were in black and white and it was not until 1966 that she introduced colour. Riley stretches the viewer's perception - is the movement real or illusory and how does the colour relate to the space?
