Bridget Riley challenges the popular view that her work is scientific insisting that she places herself in the romantic tradition, the experience of nature and its expression.
Riley has a sense of wonder at the world which influences her work:
"What happens in the world - just out walking.......is so visually extraordinary if you see it for what it is. Yet people can deal with these amazing visual events. Yet when something just faintly, faintly as violent and amazing is on canvas they have problems with it. " Bridget Riley. The Independent. 8.9.92
