Up and Down by Dieter Rot

Up and Down by Dieter Rot

Up and Down reveals perhaps Dieter Roth's experience with silk-screen printing where each colour is introduced separately on a different 'screen'. Cars, trucks and buses are placed close together, seen from different viewpoints and arranged on the same picture plane creating a schematic effect. Often the work of Dieter Roth is a comment on socio-political events and it is possible that this work refers to the oil crisis of the 1970s. The work reflects developing concerns about the effect of cars on the environment at a time when car ownership was still a common aspiration.
