Bush said that the Sash series, of which this work is a good example, "is based on what looks like a sash, or a woman ... comes from a woman's shop that I saw in New York with a model in the window and it had like a pink shirt on and there was a belt that was green say, and brown skirt coming down. That's the pattern for the thing you see. And that developed into broad sashes, fat sashes, narrow sashes."
