For a period in the late 1960s and early 1970s sculptural reliefs featured frequently in Milne's output; in these he explores relationships between line, texture and plane - often, as in this example, reflecting architectonic themes. The piece might also be said to have some affinity with the painted reliefs of Ben Nicholson, the doyen of the St Ives artistic community.
