This painting was purchased in 1970 for the Coventry College of Education collection from the Royal Academy Schools Exhibition (Catalogue No. 34).

Students had been given the theme of ‘Storm’ for a figure composition. Wells chose not to present an outdoor depiction of extreme weather but instead the emotional response of someone avoiding it, blocking it out behind a closed French window and heavy curtains. The painting was thus more to do with the comforting patterns and colour of a safe sanctuary from a storm.
