Landscape by John Whittall
|
Purchased for Coventry College of Education from the Royal Academy in 1970.
This study of a birch tree on the edge of a wood, shows the results of the academic training provided by the Royal Aademy Schools. With its adroit control of contrasting areas of tone and the quality of the lines produced by the soft pencil, the work shows a mastery of both composition and lively mark-making. It represents the traditional approach to landscape which, at the time it was produced, was rapidly disappearing from art education in Britain.
