A linocut is a popular type of relief print where a design is cut into a layer of thick linoleum. The lino is cut using metal tools similar to those used in woodcut prints but it is a difficult process to master as the material is not easy to cut. Because of the nature of the print the most effective way to use linocut tends to be with bold and simple designs. Artists such as Matisse and Picasso have used this process to its best advantage.
