This decorative piece of work uses the technique of linocut which had been used by artists such as Matisse and Picasso and became popular among British artists in the 1950s. The design is cut into a piece of thick linoleum glued onto a wooden block using metal tools similar to those used in woodcut prints. Because of the nature of the medium the most effective way to use linocut tends to be with bold and simple designs.
