Miss Browne, the subject, has commented thus on the sitting, 'Rejecting the offer of some better quality paper, he tried a pen and ink sketch but discarded it immediately, saying 'that won't do, it makes you look like a Borough Councillor'. Spencer went on to make a portrait in pencil of Miss Browne.
