Untitled by Sylvia Scamell

The scale of the painting is unusual among the purchases for the Coventry College of Education and perhaps reflects the scale of many of the paintings of this period. However, it does not reflect the practice of the time in which internal compositional values were rejected and the properties of the artwork, its relationship to perception, behaviour and the spectator were all explored. Perhaps this painting struck a chord with its purchasers from Coventry through its resemblance to the Coventry cathedral tapestry by Graham Sutherland. Although there is no central figure, the painting is divided into areas but achieves harmony through the restricted use of colour and contrast.
