About the Project

Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens is one of the most important literary figures in history and 2012 sees the bicentenary of his birth. As we approach his anniversary on 7th February 2012, we will be publishing a series of videos, podcasts and articles examining all aspects of Dickens' life and works, the era in which they were created, and more recent adaptations for film, television and stage.

Drawing on the knowledge and expertise from a wide range of academics across the University, the Celebrating Dickens website will offer a new, fresh insight into some of his works and the era in which he wrote his fantastic novels. We want the project to be a timeless resource of information for all things Dickensian.

Professor Jon Mee, from the Department of English and Comparative Literary Studies is the lead academic for the project, and with him, the project has developed to include researchers and students from across the University including academics from the Department of History, School of Law, Health and Social Studies, Theatre Studies and Warwick Medical School.

In homage to Charles Dickens our project is being serialised, like most of his novels, with this first instalment launched on December 5 2011. Further content will be released at the start of January 2012; and on the 7th February, to mark the 200th anniversary of his birth we will be publishing a feature-length documentary that takes a detailed look at Dickens.

The production of the documentary was led by Professor Jon Mee and the Communications Office, who have been filming in various locations including Dickens World, in Kent as well as The Charles Dickens Museum, in Camden, and several other locations in London.

We hope that you enjoy exploring our content and learning more about Charles Dickens as we celebrate the 200th anniversary of his birth.
