Classics & Ancient History Token Communities in the Ancient Mediterranean

Explore the Project

This ERC funded 5 year project is the first major study of ancient tokens across time and space. Tokens played central roles in cultural, religious, political and economic life in antiquity; closer study of these objects will result in a greater understanding of the ancient world and its cultural legacy. The project explores how these objects actively generated different types of community, contextualising the contemporary rise of alternative and community currencies.
