4. Age Specific Theme

Overview of Theme

This theme reflects the specific needs of different age groups looking at: Infant-safe food; preschool; and primary school requirements etc

The groups involved in this research were:

Group 1

This mother focuses on selecting baby-friendly ingredients, such as salt-free, high-calcium noodles, homemade seafood balls, and fresh vegetables. She prioritizes shopping at Costco for cherry tomatoes and fish, supplemented by free-range eggs and seasonal produce from rural areas to ensure freshness and food safety. She shared, ‘The cherry tomatoes are vine-grown and a bit sour; at first, my baby didn’t like them much, but now, with fewer added, he can finish two or three.’ When preparing baby meals, the parent uses baby-friendly cooking oils to sauté tomatoes, adds greens and egg yolks, and incorporates homemade seafood balls into noodles. She said, ‘Homemade food feels safer with no additives.’ Through these carefully prepared meals, she strives to create a safe and healthy dietary environment for her baby.

Group 39 婴儿食品专属选择

This mother carefully selects spinach noodles and baby-specific soy sauce suitable for infants aged 6–24 months, sourcing them primarily from maternity stores to ensure quality and safety.

She shared, ‘I feel more assured buying baby-specific products from maternity stores, such as baby soy sauce and noodles.’ The parent also learns online how to prepare healthy complementary foods, using baby soy sauce and sesame to create meals tailored to her child’s nutritional needs.

She explained, ‘Formula milk alone isn’t nutritionally complete, so I add dishes like egg noodles to the diet.’ With a focus on balanced nutrition and safe ingredients, she strives to provide a healthy and thoughtful diet for her infant.

Group 2

The child is not picky, and the mother tends to stimulate the child’s appetite by enhancing meal variety and using colorful combinations.

She shared, ‘My child eats almost everything now, which allows me more flexibility in meal planning.’ Fresh ingredients like fish, green vegetables, and carrots are sourced from Hema supermarkets and local markets, with each meal offering a different combination. These meals not only meet nutritional needs but also make dining enjoyable for the child. The parent added, ‘Our body needs diverse nutrients, just like a painting needs multiple colors to look beautiful; this gives us energy.’

Through this approach, she successfully provides her child with healthy and enjoyable meal options.

Group 3

This mother learns creative recipes online, adding fun elements to make them appealing to her child. She shared, ‘Some dishes I learned from my parents, but most of the recipes I use now are from online resources.’

She tries different dishes daily, focusing on colour coordination, such as adding carrots, lettuce, and fungus to shredded pork in garlic sauce, creating meals that are both visually appealing and nutritionally balanced.

She added, ‘No matter the dish, a good colour combination enhances appetite.’ Through creativity and effort, she provides a variety of nutritious and enjoyable meal options for her child.

Group 4

这位妈妈根据孩子对面食的偏好,准备了多样的菜品,例如炸酱面、饺子和鱼香肉丝。她特别提到:“孩子喜欢吃面食,比如炸酱面和饺子,既营养又色香味俱全。” 在食材选择上,她从本地菜市场采购新鲜的蔬菜和肉类,以确保质量和安全。家长还表示:“自己做的比较放心,外面的食物不卫生,还可能有添加剂。” 通过这种方式,她为孩子提供了健康均衡的饮食,既满足了孩子的口味,又保证了饮食的营养和安全。

This mother tailor-makes meals to suit her child’s preference for noodles by preparing a variety of dishes, such as zha jiang mian (noodles with soybean paste), dumplings, and shredded pork in garlic sauce.

She shared, ‘My child enjoys noodles like zha jiang mian and dumplings; they are both nutritious and visually appealing.’ To ensure food safety and quality, she sources fresh vegetables and meats from local markets, saying, ‘I feel more assured with homemade meals since outside food can be unsanitary and may contain additives.

This approach provides her child with balanced and flavourful meals, catering to both taste preferences and nutritional needs.

Group 5

She shared, ‘My daughter can be quite picky, but I try my best to make healthy and nutritious meals for her, and she really enjoys them.’ To diversify the meals, she adds ingredients like chives and diced carrots to dishes such as egg pancakes and dough drop soup. She added, ‘Since my child is in a growth phase, I frequently use green leafy vegetables and meat, keeping the flavours light and healthy.’ Drawing on advice from her mother and learning new recipes online, this parent ensures her child receives balanced nutrition through appealing and varied home-cooked meals.
