Overview of Theme

The theme of Food Quality and Safety emphasize the avoidance of additives, preference for home-cooked meals, and freshness. It explores the issues around sourcing organic ingredients, the process of making home-cooked food vs.eating out or store-bought food and homemade snacks.

Group 15

During the pandemic, this mother relied on local markets and Sam's Club to source ingredients, ensuring both freshness and food safety. She avoided processed foods by preparing homemade items like nougat and cakes. She also paid special attention to the safety of additives in her children's food, avoiding MSG and chicken stock, and strictly controlling salt intake.
The mother mentioned: ‘We have very few snacks at home because we already include plenty of fruit and milk as additional meals.’
Through these efforts, she created a healthier food environment for her family.
Group 19

This maternal grandparents live with the this family, while the grandmother is charge of meal preparation. Ingredients are mainly sourced from local markets, supermarkets, and Hema (a brand of a fresh food market) prioritizing freshness and quality. The family’s diet revolves around traditional northern foods, such as homemade dumplings and noodles, with a focus on nutritional balance, including high-protein fish, eggs, and a variety of vegetables.
She shared, ‘Our child is a little picky, but he loves coriander, green onions, tomatoes, and potatoes, so I make sure to prepare dishes with these ingredients he likes.’ To ensure food safety, the family prefers simply cooked with minimum oil, salt, and additives.
Group 41

This mother shares particular concerned about pesticide residues in food, so she purchases fresh ingredients from community vegetable and meat shops to ensure freshness and avoid stockpiling. She shared, ‘The meat and vegetables there are very fresh. I buy just enough for each meal, which helps keep the ingredients fresh.’
To further reduce risks, she washes the vegetables multiple times and prefers home-cooked meals over processed foods. Based on her child’s preferences and nutritional needs, she prepares a variety of meals such as lean meat porridge, braised eggplant, and homemade twist fritters. Through these efforts, she ensures food safety while stimulating her child’s appetite.
Group 58

This mother chooses to grow various vegetables at home during the summer, reducing her reliance on markets and ensuring pesticide-free produce. She shared, ‘In the summer, we grow all kinds of vegetables ourselves. It’s safer for the child to eat, and it’s better for their health.’
Additionally, she prefers homemade meals, such as cold noodles and roasted chicken, to minimize her child’s exposure to takeout or processed foods. Based on her child’s preferences and nutritional needs, she prepares a variety of meals.
She explained, ‘Since my child is still growing, I focus on balanced nutrition, ensuring they eat meat, vegetables, fruits, and grains.’
