Placement: Rebecca Hall
Rebecca is on the Socio-Legal Studies pathway at the University of Nottingham, researching ‘Technological Advances in Weaponry, the Remoteness of Human Agency and the Erosion of Humanity in International Humanitarian Law’
She undertook a placement with the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) from October to December 2023.
Rebecca’s placement with RUSI in the winter of 2023 allowed her to apply her research skills to a policy environment, network with professionals relevant to her PhD, and to identify future career goals.
“This placement has conveyed a myriad of benefits, both on my PhD research and future career”
During her placement, Rebecca was primarily engaged with the work of the UK Project on Nuclear Issues (UKPONI), gaining experience in the organisation of events and the preparation of documentation. Rebecca’s time working with RUSI provided insight into how research is conducted within think tanks, and the discussions she had with colleagues has highlighted potential new areas for research.
Rebecca also had the opportunity to attend high-profile events hosted by RUSI, including the Annual Chief of the Defence Staff Lecture in December.
“This internship was an excellent opportunity to experience a research role outside of university academia. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at RUSI”
