Academic Placement - Yamin Chowdhary

Yamin is on the Sociology pathway at the University of Warwick and recently undertook an Academic Placement at the Department of Sociology, University of Sussex.

During his time at Sussex, Yamin worked closely with host mentor Dr. Paul Boyce to refine the theoretical framework of his thesis and develop future journal articles. Apart from auditing the newly designed postgraduate module Queer Worlds: Sexualities, Knowledge, Theory, Affect’, Yamin also co-delivered a joint guest lecture for the module alongside Dr. Dhiren Borisa, exploring the complex relationship between national identity and queer assertion in India.

The collaboration is already yielding tangible academic outputs. Yamin has successfully submitted a paper titled ‘Queer In and Out of the Nation’ for the upcoming Thinking Gender Justice conference in Dublin this June. He is planning to co-convene an inter-institutional conference panel on queer internationalism for the ISA South Asia in World Politics Conference in 2026.

Yamin would encourage MGS students to use opportunities like academic placements for proactive networking, noting that the relationship-building and teaching experience have immensely boosted his confidence for a future career in academia.
