Academic Placement – Helen Evans
Helen, who is on the Education pathway at the University of Birmingham, completed a 12-week Academic Placement at the University of Sheffield where they became fully engaged in university life at the University of Sheffield.
This included participation in Critical Disability Studies reading groups, workshops and events (in-person and online). Helen was actively networking with PGRs, ECRs and established academics from the WAARC team, iHuman, the School of Education and Participatory Research Network, arranged one-to-one discussions relating to disability, research methods and academic career progression. Within the workshops and events, they also met with disability advocates from disabled people’s organisations and other connected non-academics.
The highlight of Emma’s placement was when they were asked to design and facilitate a creative methods workshop for the Participatory Research Network. They designed a hybrid workshop exploring a creative mapping method ‘Moving Maps’.
