Overseas Institutional Visit (OIV) – Emma Taylor
Emma is on the Health & Well-Being pathway at the University of Birmingham and completed an 8 week visit at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in the Netherlands for their OIV.
During their time there, Emma visited three organisations that provide support to disabled children, including children with intellectual disabilities. These organisations were: Bartimeus (https://bartimeus.nl/), Odion (https://odion.nl/) and Cordaan (https://www.cordaan.nl/). The aim of these visits was to learn about the different early interventions and supports offered by these organisations for disabled children.
Furthermore, Emma presented the research findings from their first PhD study: Trajectories of Mother-Child Closeness and Child Behavioural and Emotional Outcomes in Families of Children with Intellectual Disabilities, to academics within the department of their host institution.
They also planned and delivered a statistical workshop focussed on Structural Equation Modelling and Latent Growth Curve Modelling, which they used in their first PhD study.
A key output of Emma’s visit to VU Amsterdam was the collaboration on a research study focussing on the association between early parent-child interactions and the development of child prosocial behaviour over time in families of children with intellectual disabilities.
