Placement - Eliza Niblett
Eliza is on the Psychology pathway at the University of Birmingham and completed a 9-week placement with Autistica.
During the placement Eliza worked on several projects, including working on some recently collected survey data about attitudes to autism, summarising the data to compare knowledge, behaviours and beliefs about autism across different demographic groups, and comparing it to similar data collected in 2022 to look at progress across time. They also worked on writing tips and research summaries for the Autistica Tips Hub and contributed to qualitative coding on a project about employment skills for autistic young people. Another project was about autism misinformation, reviewing and summarising literature about present-day misinformation and its historical contexts.
Eliza gained experience of working outside of academia and understanding of how autism research can be translated into real world impact. They also had the opportunity to develop some additional skills in qualitative data analysis and research communication.
