Overseas Institutional Visit (OIV) – Galina Gardiner
Galina is on the Applied Health pathway at the University of Warwick and spent 4 weeks on an OIV at the University College Hospital (UCH) and the University of Ibadan (UoI) in Nigeria.
Galina gained experience of fieldwork with researchers from the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Centre (CCAMH) at UCH with four days being spent in the field. They were able to complement their fieldwork days with office-based meetings with CCAMH researchers and learned about different projects, research methods and findings.
Furthermore, during their time there Galina met with several academics, was invited to hold an oil colour-mixing workshop with first-year students and presenting a seminar enabling them to share their research with postgraduates and staff from UI Communications and Language department.
Overall, Galina felt that they gained valuable experience of how to conduct research with vulnerable and marginalised populations in Nigeria and established good links with researchers and academics. The meetings, trips, seminar and other activities broadened their perspectives on art, wellbeing and caregiving.
