Placement - Caitlin Bunce
Caitlin Bunce is on the Social Policy pathway at the University of Nottingham and undertook a 13-week placement with the Office for Environmental Protection.
During the placement, Caitlin participated in many projects and activities which helped develop her insight into the practicalities of monitoring environmental law and environmental progress, understandings of wider issues in water pollution regulations, and the importance of organisational strategy and priorities in the OEP and similar organisations. A highlight of the placement is that Caitlin attended discussions for a core task of the OEP, which is to assess environmental progress each year. This is a big project of the OEP. Caitlin was able to look at both the end and the beginning of two regional reports, giving her the opportunity to see how decisions were made about what to highlight, what to recommend, as well as discussions around indicators to use and datasets to draw on.
At the end of the placement, Caitlin delivered presentations respectively on her work with the OEP and her research, which received a large amount of interests from members across the organisation.
Caitlin enjoyed her time with the OEP, during which she exchanged conversations with colleagues with a vast array of experiences, and observed the decision-making process of projects. The placement has helped clarify Caitlin’s thinking on future career options and what can be valuable in spaces outside of academia.
