Anthony Lucio
Brief Biography
I am currently a Visiting Research Fellow in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Warwick working in a world-leading electrochemistry group under the supervision of Prof. Julie V. Macpherson. My research centres on the development of functionalised boron-doped diamond electrode sensors for applications relevant to the water industry. Additionally, I have received funding through the Institute of Advanced Study and Warwick Ventures to look into commercial markets for the electrochemical technology. I completed my PhD in Chemistry in early 2018 at the University of Iowa (USA) where I studied fundamental surface (electro)chemistry of ionic liquids using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. In 2015 I was awarded a National Science Foundation fellowship that supported a three-month research visit to Monash University (Australia) to work on electrochemical studies of ionic liquids under the supervision of Prof. Alan M. Bond, which served as the foundation for my PhD research into ionic liquids.
Research
Free chlorine sensor
My latest research probed the pH-dependent speciation of free chlorine using BDD electrodes. Free chlorine, comprised of HOCl, OCl-, and Cl2, is a primary disinfectant used by water utilities to generate potable drinking water. The disinfectant power of free chlorine is highly pH dependent, and with HOCl being ca. 80× more effective than OCl-, knowing the pH is critical to ensure the proper dosage is applied. Current detection methods for free chlorine have significant, known drawbacks with their operation and I believe our electrochemical sensor technology can bring several advantages to the water industry. Thus, I am working to develop our electrode technology and optimise it to operate at significantly lower concentrations (e.g. sub-ppm levels) relevant to drinking water applications.
Hypochlorite sensor
I have recently developed sp2-carbon functionalised boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes for sensing applications in extreme environments. In particular, I have optimised these BDD sensors for operation in the highly oxidising/alkaline solution environments associated with concentrated bleach solutions (i.e. hypochlorite is the active component of bleach). You can read my latest work published in ACS Sensors (link here). I am interested in exploring commercial opportunities for this sensor.
