Warwick Aquatic Monitoring Station (WAMOS)

Warwick Aquatic Monitoring Station (WAMOS)

Welcome to the Warwick Aquatic Monitoring Station (WAMOS)

Established in 2023, WAMOS has a broad mission to create, maintain, and analyse longitudinal datasets from aquatic environments. These datasets will provide crucial for addressing key research questions centred in microbial ecology and expanding on other areas such as environment science and biological discovery.

The starting – flagship - project for WAMOS focusses on the Draycote Reservoir owned and operated by Seven Trent. This project involves weekly sampling of four water depths to record chemical parameters and isolate microbial DNA. Analysis of this data will allow us to understand how composition of natural microbial communities responds to environmental changes across time. In addition, we will be able to isolate individual microbes and viruses from these samples, to better understand their population dynamics and interactions.

WAMOS involves collaboration among microbiologists, environmental scientists, bioinformaticians, and systems biologists. It employs concepts and techniques from all these disciplines. As such, it offers significant value for teaching and training of undergraduate and postgraduate students.
