Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics - Warwick student chapter

Based in Warwick's Mathematics department, our main aim is to organise seminars, workshops and events for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. These talks are presented by academics in applied mathematics as well as people working in industry. This provides a great opportunity for students to informally meet researchers from various disciplines and backgrounds.

Our chapter also provides a link with the international SIAM community allowing members to benefit from the various opportunities offered by SIAM.

Students and postdocs of any department who are interested in Industrial Mathematics and its Applications are encouraged to join the chapter here. Membership is free and members will be eligible for free membership to SIAM.

SIAM Talk: Careers for the curious

Tessella is a scientific software and data analytics consulting firm which works across a range of industries. We take high calibre scientists and develop them into professional software developers, data scientists, business analysts and technical consultants. With our broad technical background and technical knowledge we engage with clients to solve their most challenging technical problems.
In this talk I will provide a high-level overview of the careers and type of work/projects available at Tessella. I will discuss my role as a data scientist within Tessella and why I love both my current day-to-day work and the paths in front of me!

SIAM Talk: From Neutron stars to NAG

The Warwick SIAM chapter welcomes John muddle from NAG to talk about neutron stars in software engineering.

John Muddle is a Technical Sales Support Engineer at NAG, a software company which provides methods for the solution of mathematical and statistical problems, and offers services to users of High performance computing (HPC) systems. He joined NAG in 2010 after obtaining his PhD in applied mathematics at the University of Southampton.

The talk will be held in MS.04 from 2pm to 3pm on Wednesday 10th February.

This talk will be split into two parts: Part 1 will focus on the work undertaken in my PhD and Part 2 will focus on my role at NAG. Starting with an introduction to Neutron Stars, Gravitational Waves and Riemann Problems, I will describe some of the original work and the results obtained in my PhD. I will finish this section with a discussion on the future of Gravitational Waves. I will then give an introduction to NAG and my role as UK academic account manager. This section will highlight some of the different industries and research areas where NAG's software is used.
