What Is Horizons?
Widening Access to Healthcare
This inspiring programme has been designed to give your students a hands-on experience of the work of the NHS and the various roles within it.
Staff and medical students will be on hand throughout the day, helping to reveal to your pupils what life is like inside University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire. They'll also provide practical advice on training routes and career options within the NHS.
The day is an excellent opportunity for students to learn about a wide range of career options, while demonstrating how their studies at school and college are transferable to healthcare.
Activities students will experience on the day include:
- Discovering the diagnosis in x-ray
- Scrubbing into theatre and having a go at suturing
- Managing a broken bone with plaster of paris
- Responding to a cardiac arrest call
- Helping to deliver a baby
Please note: this programme is run across different sites at UHCW hospital. Lift access to all floors and areas is available, but please inform us in advance if any special requirements for disabled access are required.
We ask that all attendees be courteous of other staff and patients when moving between hospital areas.
A multi-faith prayer centre is available to students to use; please let us know if this is to be required.
"Students absolutely loved the experience, and those who missed it are already asking if there will be another opportunity to go."
