Persistent nightmares in childhood could be linked to psychotic experiences in later adolescence

In a new paper published in the British Journal of Psychiatry, a team based in the Division of Mental Health and Wellbeing at Warwick Medical School (WMS) found that persistent childhood nightmares both at an early age (between 2 and 9) and at age 12 were significantly associated with new incidences of suspected or definite psychotic experiences at age 18.

Adding chemotherapy to standard prostate cancer treatment may extend life expectancy

New research led by the University of Warwick shows newly diagnosed advanced prostate cancer patients who received the chemotherapy drug docetaxel with standard hormone therapy lived ten months longer on average, compared to those who received standard therapy alone.

Children who are bullied suffer worse long-term mental health problems than those who are maltreated

A new study published in The Lancet Psychiatry shows that children who have been bullied by peers suffer worse in the longer term than those who have been maltreated by adults.

The research is led by Professor Dieter Wolke from Warwick’s Department of Psychology and Warwick Medical School. The study is due to be presented at the Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) annual meeting in San Diego on Tuesday 28 April.

A couple who experienced four heartbreaking miscarriages in two years are raising money for a recurrent miscarriage clinic at University Hospital in Coventry which helped them to finally become parents to a baby boy.

Kayleigh and Matt Burton are running the North Lincolnshire Half Marathon on 3 May to raise funds for the Biomedical Research Unit in Reproductive Health at University Hospital in Coventry.

Rare Michelangelo bronzes discovered by international research team

An expert from the University of Warwick is part of an international team which believes they have discovered not one, but two rare Michelangelo bronzes.

It was thought that no bronzes by Michelangelo had survived, but Clinical Anatomist Professor Peter Abrahams has been helping colleagues at the University of Cambridge and the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge to verify two statues.

If the attribution is correct, they are the only surviving Michelangelo bronzes in the world.

Fruit and vegetable consumption could be as good for your mental as your physical health, new research suggests.

The research, conducted by the University of Warwick’s Medical School using data from the Health Survey for England, and published by BMJ Open focused on mental wellbeing and found that high and low mental wellbeing were consistently associated with an individual’s fruit and vegetable consumption.

Researchers develop new DNA sequencing method to diagnose tuberculosis

Researchers working in the UK and The Gambia, have developed a new approach to the diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB) that relies on direct sequencing of DNA extracted from sputum (a technique called metagenomics) to detect and characterize the bacteria that cause TB without the need for time-consuming culture of bacteria in the laboratory.

New drug target could prevent major global cause of maternal death

Researchers at the University of Warwick have discovered a new target for drugs that could prevent the deaths of thousands of women in the developing world due to heavy blood loss after childbirth.

Postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) occurs when the uterus fails to contract vigorously after childbirth and the mother loses 500mls or more of blood in the 24 hours after delivery. PPH is responsible for maternal death in 1 in 1,000 deliveries in the developing world. According to recent figures, PPH also complicates around 10% of all births in England and Wales.

Bully victims more likely to suffer night terrors and nightmares

Children who are bullied at ages 8-10 are more likely to suffer from sleep walking, night terrors or nightmares by the time they are 12 years old.

In a study published this week in Pediatrics, journal of the American Pediatric Association, Professor Dieter Wolke and Dr Suzet Tanya Lereya from the University of Warwick, found being bullied increases the risk for a category of sleep disorders known as parasomnias. These are sleep-related problems such as nightmares, night terrors or sleep walking.
