Giving patients choice in back pain does not improve outcome

‘Physiotherapist knows best’ may be the best option for people suffering from back pain, according to research from the University of Warwick.

Researchers at Warwick Medical School carried out a study to find out if offering back pain patients attending a physiotherapy department better information on treatment choices had any effect on the outcome. The study was funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).

The Lancet: 1 in 5 child deaths in England preventable

Child deaths have fallen to very low rates in all industrialised countries, but many deaths in children and adolescents are still potentially preventable, and much more could be done to cut future deaths, according to a new three-part series on child deaths in high-income countries, published in The Lancet. The series is led by Dr Peter Sidebotham, Associate Professor of Child Health at Warwick Medical School at the University of Warwick in the UK.

Sugar substance ‘kills’ good cholesterol

Scientists at the University of Warwick have discovered that ‘good’ cholesterol is turned ‘bad’ by a sugar-derived substance.

The substance, methylglyoxal - MG, was found to damage ‘good’ HDL cholesterol, which removes excess levels of bad cholesterol from the body.

Social inequalities in salt consumption remain despite national drop in salt intake over last 10 years

People from low socio-economic positions in Britain still eat more salt than those from higher socio-economic positions, irrespective of where they live.

A paper published in the BMJ Open journal and led by Warwick Medical School suggests social inequalities in salt intake have hardly changed in the period from 2000-01 to 2011. This is despite a national average salt reduction over this time.
