Title:
M-POWER: Mindfulness Prior to Orthopaedic surgery to improve Wellbeing and Enhance Recovery
Chief Investigator: Debbie Larson
Sponsor: University of Warwick
Funder: National Institute of Health Research
Registration Number:
Summary:
Many people experience pain and disability due to wear and tear in their joints as they get older. Over 200 000 people in the UK have an orthopaedic operation such as a joint replacement each year to relieve this pain and allow them to be more active. Most will have a good result from surgery but approximately 20% will have ongoing pain that affects their daily activities.
Mindfulness has been shown to improve physical and mental wellbeing for people living with conditions such as depression and chronic pain. This feasibility study will teach patients waiting for orthopaedic surgery one of three different versions of mindfulness. If patients are willing to learn mindfulness before surgery, broadly find it helpful and it is possible to deliver mindfulness in this way, a larger study will be developed to see if it helps people have a better recovery after orthopaedic surgery.
Sample size:
99 patients will be recruited from three hospitals in the United Kingdom.
Primary outcome:
Feasibility outcomes such as recruitment, retention, adherence to the intervention and completion of outcome measures will be recorded to determine if progression to a larger trial is warranted.
Duration:
Recruitment begins in December 2026. Data collection will be completed in April 2028.
