1.1 Explain those aspects of the biomedical sciences, oral physiology and craniofacial, oral and dental anatomy that are significant in the management of patients
1.2 Explain those aspects of general anatomy, physiology, embryology and biochemistry relevant to orthodontic therapy
1.3 Explain the aetiology and pathogenesis of oral disease
1.4 Undertake satisfactory infection control and prevent physical, chemical and microbiological contamination in the clinic and in the laboratory
1.5 Arrange and use the working clinical and laboratory environment in the safest and most efficient manner
1.6 Explain health and safety legislation as it affects clinical and laboratory practice
1.7 Explain the scientific principles of medical ionizing radiation and statutory regulations
1.8 Maintain full, accurate and contemporaneous clinical records
1.9 Define consent, duty of care and confidentiality
1.10 Understand the orthodontic therapist’s responsibilities in relation to the referral of patients
1.11 explain patients’ rights and appropriate complaints procedures
1.12 explain the competency range of orthodontic therapists and other members of the dental team
1.13 explain the regulatory functions of the GDC; the legal and ethical obligations of registered members of the dental team and the obligation to practice in the best interests of the patient at all times (see section 14.11 Fitness to Practice)
1.14 describe the need for lifelong learning and continuing professional development
1.15 describe the law as it applies to dental records
1.16 describe the scientific principles of sterilisation, disinfection and antisepsis
1.17 evaluate the implications of a positive medical history and the main medical disorders that may affect the provision of orthodontic care
1.18 be competent at carrying out resuscitation procedures (Basic Life Support)
1.19 describe how to identify and manage medical emergencies and provide immediate management of anaphylactic reaction, hypoglycaemia, upper respiratory obstruction, cardiac arrest, fits, vasovagal attack, inhalation or ingestion of foreign bodies, and haemorrhage
1.20 explain the principles of first aid
1.21 recognize the early stages of mucosal abnormality and importance of appropriate referral
1.22 Describe the principles of an evidence based approach to learning, clinical, professional practice and decision making
1.23 Recognise the risks around the clinical environment and manage these in a safe and efficient manner
1.24 Effectively manage own time and resources
1.25 Treat all patients with equality, respect and dignity recognise the impact of personal behaviour and manage this professionally
