On completion of the module, you should be able to...


5.1 explain the role of orthodontics in multi-disciplinary care

5.2 describe the aetiology, classification and prevalence of cleft lip and palate and the role of orthodontics in cleft-lip and palate care

5.3 describe the prevalence of ectopic teeth and be able to clinically manage patients with ectopic teeth

5.4 describe the psychological and sociological aspects of health, illness, behavioural change and disease

5.5 use information technology; including e-mail, practice management systems, the Internet, and MEDLINE; understand the role of healthcare informatics in the provision of orthodontic care

5.6 communicate with patients, their families and carers, other members of the dental team and other healthcare professionals; manage patients from different social and ethnic backgrounds; work as part of the dental team; understand the social and psychological issues relevant to the care of patients.

5.7 Treat all patients with equality respect and dignity

5.8 work with other members of the dental team; interpret and work to an orthodontic care plan or prescription.

5.9 Identify where patient’s needs may differ from the treatment plan or prescription and refer patients for advice where appropriate

5.10 understand the role of the orthodontic therapist within the framework of the dental team and the organisation of orthodontic services within the UK

5.11 Recognise the management and organization of local referral networks,local clinical guidelines and policies

5.12 Describe the the basic principles of oral health trends and planning of oral health care and prevention

5.13 psychological and sociological aspects of health, illness, behavioural change and disease

5.14 Describe and evaluate the role of health promotion in terms of changing the environment and community and individual behaviours to deliver health gain

5.15 Recognise the impact of personal behaviour and manage this professionally
